Financial boost for businesses who help households save energy

Organisations who help households use less energy at home will soon be eligible to receive financial energy saver incentives.

Energy Saver Incentive is the public name for VEET - which is a practical, grass-roots way for families to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and cut their power bills.

In its first three years, the Energy Saver Incentive will lead to actions that will save 8.1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas - the environmental equivalent of making around 675,000 households carbon neutral for a year.

Under the scheme, energy retail companies are required to meet annual energy efficiency targets by facilitating the introduction of energy-saving measures into Victorian homes.

They can do this by offering discounted products and services themselves, or they can partner organisation or businesses such as tradespeople or appliance retailers who have registered to participate. Participating organisations create certificates according to how much CO2 they help a household save by undertaking a range of energy efficiency activities, which energy retail companies can buy from the businesses to help them achieve their target.

It is likely that participating organisations will provide discounts and special offers on a long list of eligible products, including energy efficient fridges, hot water systems and heating, as well as home improvements such as weather seals, insulation, and double-glazing windows. Accredited organisations can create certificates according to how much CO2 they help a household save by undertaking a range of energy efficiency activities, which energy retail companies can then buy to help them achieve their target.
